As social media channels were obsessed with snow in and around Oxford, here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 14 – 20 January.

More information came out about Oxford County Council’s proposals for the London Road Improvments Stage 3 which I wrote about after a public meeting last month. Note that it says the new scheme “delivers much greater benefits to buses and other traffic; it also minimises the impact on cyclists and pedestrians”. Cyclists and pedestrians bottom of the priority pile again then.

A woman was killed when her car skidded and overturned on the Northern bypass between Marston and Headington on Friday night (the night after the snowfall). Anyone with any further information is asked to contact the police.

Two separate accidents on Sunday evening closed the Eastern by-pass at Horspath Driftway between Headington and Littlemore.

Headington Quarry resident Dr Julia Gasper, who stood for the City Council elections last May as UKIP candidate for Quarry & Risinghurst has quit her position as Chair of the Oxford branch of UKIP. She was investigated by her party after posting “extremist and offensive” homophobic opinions on the UKIP online Members’ Forum. The Mirror newspaper broke the original story last Saturday and reports of her loss of office started appearing on Thursday. The story made The Marr Show on BBC1 on Sunday when Nigel Farage confirmed Dr Gasper “has resigned”. It seems she remains a member of the party, which Farage said “believes in free speech”.

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 7 – 13 January.

Police appealed for information about a burglary and an attempted burglary in Headington the week before last. The incidents happened in Peat Moors and Dene Road.

The Fire Service was called to Foresters Tower, Wood Farm late on Tuesday afternoon to attend to a small kitchen fire.

@TVP_Oxford are appealing for information or sightings of a black Range Rover LX08 YJH stolen from Merewood Avenue, Risinghurst Sandhills [corrected] on Wednesday.

The Headington Heritage blog carried an impassioned plea to prevent Bury Knowle Barn and Stables being transferred to private ownership for development. History of the buildings on headington.org.uk.

@Oxford_brookes has restricted parking at its Gipsy Lane site to visitors only. It used to be for staff as well.

@Ruskin_College‘s plans to develop Ruskin Fields for housing have been rejected by the government’s Planning Inspector.

Formal consultation has opened about @WimdmillOxford school becoming three-form entry. @RuthWilk explains why it’s important to let your views be known (again).

@RyeStAntony school has submitted two planning applications, one (12/03283/CAC) to demolish the existing bursary building, the other (12/03240/FUL) to build a two-storey classroom building, a single-storey extension to the Randall Building and a new entrance courtyard.

Oxford City councillors have approved Oxford University’s plans for a major new research complex on the Park Hospital site.

William Hill has submitted a planning application (ref. 13/00023/FUL) for a betting shop where Cartridge World used to be. The Oxford Times carried a story headlined “Anger over plans for betting office” implying that local traders were less than happy about the idea. However only one trader is quoted, saying the idea is “ridiculous” and wishing for a retail unit instead. Hardly evidence of widespread anger I suggest. There are already two bookies in Headington and for this application to succeed a change of use will be required.

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 31 December 2012 – 6 January 2013.

The City Council’s Sites & Housing Plan, which specifies what kind of development will be permitted on particular sites throughout Oxford and establishes a number of housing policies, has been approved by the Planning Inspector. It will go to the full Council for final approval in February. I last wrote about this almost exactly a year ago and you can still see my map of the sites in OX3 with extracts from the document against each site. The Plan also creates or updates policies on student housing and HMOs.

In other development news The Oxford Mail reports that developers Haboakus have finally submitted planning applications for three developments in Oxford. Two of the developments are in Northway, the third in Cowley. I have so far failed to find the applications online so can’t confirm this is correct. Haboakus is the joint venture company formed by TV celebrity architect Kevin McCloud’s company Hab (it stands for Happiness, Architecture, Beauty) and the Oakus division of housing asociation GreenSquare (which used to be the Oxford Citizens’ Housing Association). These developments have been much delayed: I first wrote about them in Headington Headlines #3 back in March 2011. The Oxford Mail report suggests there may still be local opposition to the Northway developments. The planning applications are said to be for 21 one and two-bedroom flats to be built in Westlands Drive and 47 homes plus a new Northway community centre in Dora Carr Close. The Dora Carr Close/Community Centre site is outlined on this map.

Free parking at Thornhill P&R is to end, according to the County Council’s draft budget.
