Headington Headlines #163

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 12 – 18 May.

A report from the Quality Care Commission identified a number of areas where the JR Hospital needs to make improvements. A report in The Oxford Mail by @OllieOxMail has a full summary.

Planned road works on the Ring Road at the Kiln Lane junction for Risinghurst mean that entry to and exit from the estate will be severely restricted for about three weeks, starting on 27 May. Residents say it means they will be living on ‘an island’. The work is for “new signal poles and toucan crossing aspects”. A Council spokesman said the work will improve cycle links between Headington and Thornhill P&R, and will cost about £40,000.

After reports on twitter on Wednesday evening of police activity outside Macdonalds, this story came out the following day. A young boy was injured, thankfully not seriously, in a road accident involving a Renault Clio on The Roundway.

Headington Plan @HeadingtonPlan has set up several Policy Groups to consult on and develop policies for inclusion in the Neighbourhood Plan. Get in touch with them if you’d like to be part of the work.

In an operation on Thursday morning police issued nearly 50 tickets in traffic checks at the Headington roundabout and Bayswater Road. Sixteen drivers were issued tickets for flouting right turn bans, while 11 were fined for not wearing seatbelts. Drivers were also caught using phones and speeding in a 30mph limit.

The new Principal of Ruskin College is Dr Chris Wilkes, who has been Acting Pricipal since the departure of Audrey Mullender.

Two concrete slabs have been placed in Bury Knowle Park as bases for table-tennis tables. People are upset about the unforgiving material and the lack of any consultation which would have allowed other options to be considered. The e-democracy forum has the story.

The postponed Marston Parish Council election will be held on Thursday 26 June. The polling station will be in Mortimer Hall.

Headington Headlines #158

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 7 – 13 April.

The main obstacles to the Haboakus developments in Northway seem to have been removed with Thames Water agreeing what needs to be done about the sewerage system.

Dr Mark Crowley, a Consultant Anaesthetist from the JR Hospital, has been selected to play for the England over-40s Masters hockey team. England currently hold the World, European and Home Nations championships at this level.

Following the news of the retirement of Headteacher Keith Ponsford last week, it’s been announced that Bayards Hill primary school in Barton is to become an academy school from the start of the new term. It will be sponsored by Cheney School, the secondary school to which many Bayards Hill pupils progress.

New fitness equipment was installed in Headington Hill Park, some of it in the wrong place according to the newly-formed Friends. The Council has said it will move the offending apparatus.

The planning application for a change of use from retail to a restaurant/café at the ex-Trade Exchange shop on the London Road was withdrawn. It was unlikely to have been successful anyway.

Headington Headlines #132

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 30 September – 6 October.

Ownership of Warneford Meadow has been taken by the Oxford Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust from the Department of Health. The Trust has promised to continue the agreement under which the Meadow is maintained by the Friends of Warneford Meadow for the benefit of the community.

The agents selling the Fairview Inn on Glebelands have set a deadline of 11 October for commercial bids. You’ll remember that locals failed to raise the money to buy it after it was designated an Asset of Community Value. What happens if they don’t get any acceptable bids isn’t clear.

Sandfield Road residents have been complaining about the number of smokers from the JR Hospital who use nearby roads and a children’s play area for their cigarette breaks. But the JR, Churchill and Nuffield hospitals will get their smoking shelters. The planning application was approved on Wednesday by the East Area Planning Committee.

Headington’s 20mph zones may be more rigorously enforced by the police. In keeping with the formula applying to higher limits, action will be taken against motorists doing 24mph or more.

Up & Running will move into the old Cartridge World shop. Hancock’s Funeral Directors had an official opening 8 months after, er, opening. Daisy Chain in Windmill Road reopened after a major refurbishment.

Headington is one of the areas of Oxford that will get free wifi hotspots thanks to a governemt grant.

The Headington & Marston e-democracy forum lit up on Saturday night when people discovered that Headington Hill Park sometimes hosts wedding receptions. If only they paid more attention to Headington Headlines (June this year) they’d have known about it already.
