Headington Headlines #75

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 20 – 26 August —

Oxfordshire County Council which runs Thornhill and Water Eaton park & ride car parks is proposing to introduce charges for parking longer than 11 hours (parking is currently free). The plan is to charge £3 for parking from 11hrs up to 24hrs and more thereafter. The move is intended to deter/raise revenue from people who use the car parks for commuting into London. The proposals are open for consultation: you can give your views here. Report from BBC Oxford.

New tenants have moved into @Bill_Heine‘s shark house in New High Street. The Oxford Times carried a profile piece. You might find the very last sentence surprising!

Teenager Abu Bakkar who had been missing from his home in Barton was found safe and well on Wednesday.

Twelve cyclists were each fined £30 for cycling on Headington pavements.

What seems to have become the annual Foodies’ Festival took place in South Park over this weekend.

I blogged about Thames Water’s plans to extend the reservoir on Old Road at the top of Shotover (Horspath reservoir). Wheatley folk are understandably concerned about the construction traffic and have registered their views on the planning application. Some balance from the areas of Oxford which will benefit (Headington/East Oxford) wouldn’t go amiss – links in the blog piece.

Headington Headlines #33

Here is my round-up of local news for the week 3 – 9 October —

The road works to improve pedestrian and cycle provision around Old Road and The Slade are causing bad congestion. The whole junction will be closed next week and traffic diverted around Wood Farm, York Road and Margaret Road. Discussion on the e-dem forum predicts complete chaos and/or gridlock.

@RuthWilk wants to know if you like the idea of a craft fair in Headington. Contact her with your thoughts.

Thornhill Park & Ride is filling up very early. There’s speculation it may be a result of parking charges being re-introduced at the other P&Rs (except Water Eaton).

There were two thefts and a robbery in Headington – on Old Road, London Road and Osler Road. @TVP_Oxford have appealed for witnesses or information.

Headington Headlines #15

Here is my weekly round-up of news for the week 30 May – 5 June.

The Headington Festival took place on Sunday 5 June, and was well-attended despite the weather turning a bit damp during the afternoon. @HeadingtonNews posted some photos.

In yet another climb-down by the County Council, plans to introduce parking controls in Cheney Lane and Warneford Lane were dropped. “Controlled parking zones are not a priority”, Rodney Rose, council cabinet member for transport is reported to have said.

Laura Loves Flowers has closed after only a short time & has relocated to Sutton Courtenay (via @beccachaplin).

29 Old High Street made the news when it was put on the Save Britain’s Heritage At Risk register. This doesn’t require anything to actually happen about it.

The inaugural meeting of the Area Planning East Committee met in the Town Hall on Wednesday. Four out of 9 councillors on the committee represent ‘our’ wards: Mary Clarkson (Lab, Marston); Van Coulter (Lab, Barton & Sandhills); Roy Darke (Lab, Headington Hill & Northway); David Rundle (LibDem, Headington).

On Wednesday night thieves broke into the Helen and Douglas House charity shop in Windmill Road and raided the safe, taking about £250 in cash.
