Headington Headlines #318

Your weekly round-up of local news for 15 – 21 May.

As the heatpipe work on Churchill Drive draws near to an end, the Access to Headington works on The Slade are causing severe delays. The Hospitals Trust is advising people to allow an hour to get to the Churchill and find a parking place.

On Tuesday Prince Charles was in OX3 opening the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies on Marston Road, and Camilla paid a visit to Maggie’s at the Churchill. She probably got a parking space without waiting.

Bayard’s Hill Primary School in Barton was closed on Monday because of a power and water system failure. It was closed, then re-opened, closed again, and finally opened fully on Thursday.

We had more rain on Wednesday than in the whole of April. Warneford Lane was one of the places hit by flooding.

Still no movement on the planning application to build next to the C S Lewis Nature Reserve in Risinghurst. The story has been picked up by Private Eye, but there’s nothing in the article that we didn’t already know.

It looks like Frontier Estates are still in the business of turning Headington into a Student World Theme Park. They have apparently been trying to find people interested in selling their houses at the east end of London Road and in Barton Road. The story is on the e-democracy forum.

The Children’s Air Ambulance charity shop was broken into on Thursday/Friday night and was closed on Friday. The charity is appealing for any information.

Don’t forget Queen Street is closed to buses again, with the 8 and 9 city centre stops moved to that very inconvenient spot down St Aldates. Also the stop for outbound local buses in Headington shops has moved to outside Ladbrokes while Thames Water do some work opposite the usual stop.

Headington Headlines #317

Your weekly round-up of local news for 8 – 14 May.

I’ve changed the layout of this blog for the general election. As an experiment I’m running an online hustings, hoping I can persuade the candidates to join a conversation about their policies. Under ‘General Election OX3’ in the main menu are links to four (so far) questions I’ve invited them to answer. A full explanantion of the online hustings and how it works is in the main post about it.

All the previous content is still there; if you can’t find it from the menu a search should do the trick.

The Hospital and Vital Energi have sent this ‘Thank You’ message to everyone affected by the heatpipe work over the past months. Double bonus points to them because yes, it’s in the shape of a traffic cone!

And just as you were breathing a sigh of relief, this came out. The link in the tweet is to an article by the City Council.

As the Energy Project winds down Access to Headington gets into full swing. The latest update from Oxfordshire CC on progress with the work on The Slade is here. This link is always in the sidebar on the right, where there’s also a link if you want to subscribe to the County’s email updates on the project.

Southern Health NHS Trust is to be prosecuted by the Health & Safety Executive over the death of Connor Sparrowhawk in Slade House in 2013.

Starting on Monday 21 May (a week today) in the city centre the 8 & 9 bus stop will move from Queen Street to St Aldate’s ‘until further notice’. If you use the 13 or X13 there are changes to the routes too. Full details here.

A family pet dog was attacked and killed by another dog – a bull terrier – in Bateman Street on Thursday. The owner describes what happened here.

Andrew Smith formally opened the recently-extended Manor Surgery on Saturday.

Headington Headlines #316

Your weekly round-up of local news for 1 – 6 May.

As my commemorative blog post reports, all the heatpipe roadworks in Headington’s residential streets are finished. Work on Churchill Drive is scheduled to end on 26 May.

All my posts about the project are under the ‘Energy Project’ tab in the main menu, and there’s a page of links and contact details here.

In local election week the big news for Headington is that the Headington Neighbourhood Plan @HeadingtonPlan was approved by referendum with an 86% ‘Yes’ vote. It was no change in the County elections here in OX3, and new councillor Mark Ladbrooke was elected for Labour in the Barton & Sandhills Ward by-election following the death of Van Coulter earlier this year.

Read my posts on the results on these links:

The Conservative candidate to stand in Oxford East is Cllr Dr Suzanne Bartington. She is currently Town Councillor for Witney’s East Ward.

On 27 April between 12:00-1:00 pm police ticketed 15 drivers for exceeding the 20mph speed limit in Old Road (via @RuthWilk).
