Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 14 – 20 July.

Headington Library re-opened on Monday with a new children’s area but still no disabled access lift.

Labour announced their candidate for the Quarry & Risinghurst by-election. He is Chewe Munkonge @CheweMunkonge whose last public involvement in politics seems to have been in Abingdon South in last year’s County Council elections.

The Oxford Times carried a story about some Headington traders being unhappy about the mini-Waitrose that will be opening at the Shell petrol station. On the other hand, some aren’t unhappy.

The new Tesco Express store which opens on 29 July joined twitter as @Tesco6880.

Thames Valley Police mounted an operation on Wednesday to “educate” motorists about Elms Drive in Marston being access only rather than a way of avoiding the Cherwell Drive mini-roundabouts.

@DavidHenwood2, who stood for election in Headington Ward earlier this year, was elected Labour Councillor for Cowley Ward on Thursday with 39% of the vote and a majority of 243 over the Green candidate Hazel Dawe.

Oxford Archaeology @oatweet have published their report on the Barton Road cricket ground site, soon to be The Willows. They found nothing of interest.

The John Henry Brookes and Abercrombie buildings have attracted more recognition, this time by being nominated for the Concrete Society 2014 awards.

The Thames Water works in Wharton Road – and the road closure and diversions that go with it – are going to continue for about ten more days.

Sign of the times. Isis Hair in Windmill Road has changed its name to Ice Hair.

@UpandRunninguk‘s Headington shop is organising a social run tomorrow (Tuesday) starting from the shop at 6pm.

A County Council report has recommended that the yet-to-be-built Barton Park School should be run by Cheney Academy, as will be the case for Bayard’s Hill School in Barton from the start of the next term.

Risinghurst’s very own tattoo parlour @OxfordInk (on the Roundway) is opening a second operation in Summertown.

@Stagecoach_Ox announce a new service, the S7, starting on 28 July and connecting Carterton, Shilton Park, Minster Lovell, Witney, Eynsham and Cassington with the JR and Brookes. Scroll down this page to see a little more (no timetable yet).

Chinese take-away chain Hotcha is planning to open three outlets in Oxford – Headington, Cowely [sic] Road and Summertown. Any guesses which shop they’ll take?

Doric Properties, the developers of the controversial and generally unpopular Westway scheme in Botley, used Headington Farmers’ Market to promote their proposals on facebook. Headington Action @HeadingtonA, who organise the Headington market, quickly dissociated themselves from any connection.

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 30 June – 6 July.

The new Maggie’s centre opened at the Churchill on Tuesday.

The new development on the old cricket ground on Barton Road is to be called “The Willows”. The name was the most popular at the last Headington Ward Focus meeting.

Quarry & Risinghurst labour Councillor @laurencepbaxter is standing down as he is leaving Oxford to take up a teaching post in Prague. Expect a by-election in August or September.

A two-week hearing begins today (7 July) to decide whether the Foxwell Drive Town Green application will be granted. The decision will affect the access to and from the new Barton Park estate.

There are grants of up to £15,000 available for Headington businesses who want to promote sustainable transport by encouraging their employees to use public transport, cycling, car sharing etc. Public sector employers, charities and community groups are also included in the Travel Choices Initiative scheme.

A news story broke on Wednesday that a convicted paedophile “living in Headington” (apparently Ivy Lane) has gone on the run having failed to turn up for a court hearing. Police are asking for information.

A 20-year old man from Coleman’s Hill (near the Green Road roundabout) has been charged with sexually assaulting two teenage girls in Headington in March. He has been bailed to appear before magistrates in September.

@OBSUJazzSociety entertained shoppers and passers-by outside Waitrose on Friday to mark the store’s Partnership Day.

Signs have gone up in the window of Café Corsica implying that Oxford Designer Blinds are opening there.

The JR’s car park number 2 (outside the Women’s Centre) has had a much-needed resurfacing.
