Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 13 – 19 October.

The roadworks on the London Road, Headington roundabout and the A40 started last Monday causing even more delays to traffic on the Ring Road and the approaches to Oxford, and triggering the inevitable outcry of complaints. This time the delays were so long and the complaints so loud that the County Council decided to defer the reconstruction of The Plain – due to start today – until after Christmas.

Delays on the Eastern by-pass were exacerbated on Friday morning when a car and a cyclist collided at the junction with Kiln Lane, causing the road to be closed for a time.

The Maggie’s Centre @Maggiesoxford at the Churchill was formally opened on Monday.

A developer wants to build student accommodation and some private housing on the corner of Latimer Road and London Road, on the west side of Latimer opposite Dorset House. There is an exhibition about it in the foyer of the old entrance to Brookes on Gipsy Lane on Tuesday. More information here.

Local solicitors Edward Pilling & Co., whose offices are on the London Road, has been acquired by the law firm Withy King, who have offices in Oxford, Abingdon & Thame. All Pilling’s staff will transfer to Withy King.

A new book club is starting in Headington. The Headington Pageturners are holding their inaugural meeting in @TheWhiteHartH on 12 November. The first book for discussion is Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

Also at The White Hart a wine club starts on Wednesday this week. For £20 you get to taste 8 wines – Spanish this week – nibble some cheese and biscuits, and take a bottle home. Phone them for details and booking 01865 761737 or tweet @TheWhiteHartH.

A blue plaque to author Elizabeth Bowen was unveiled in The Croft, Headington on Sunday.

An article about @CocoNoirOxford celebrates five years of trading, but fails to notice that Café Noir has closed. Also ‘Belgium’ chocolate?

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 22 – 28 September.

The first AGM of the @HeadingtonPlan and Forum is on Wednesday 1 October at 7.30pm in the Baptist Church, Old High Street.

A burst 24″ water main (that’s a big one) overnight on Monday in Normandy Crescent (south of Horspath Road) caused significant flooding and a loss of service to some people in OX3 on Tuesday morning.

The man arrested on suspicion of raping a woman in her flat on Roosevelt Drive last Saturday appeared in court on Tuesday charged with the rape and several other offences in the area. He was remanded in custody to appear in Oxford Crown Court in October.

As if ‘troubled retail giant’ Tesco didn’t have enough to worry about, they’ve upset independent Marston Councillor Mick Haines (again) by blocking a pathway (again) with a hoarding at the site of the old Friar pub on Marston Road. The hoarding has now been moved back from the path – again.

As of today there is no longer a City 23 bus service. It used to run up the London Road then to the JR via Headley Way.

A motocyclist was seriously injured and taken to the JR after a collision with a car in Marsh Lane on Saturday morning.

As of Saturday the @CultivateOxford veg van will be outside Barclays bank every Saturday from 1030 to 1400, a slight reduction in hours.

It was the Barton Young Achievers’ Dinner on Saturday, organised by @ThriveBarton. The Thrive team also have a good news story about falling levels of anti-social behaviour in Barton.

A new local cycling account appeared on twitter – @QuarryVelo.

Headington was hit by another outbreak of #oxpong on Wednesday evening, with the bad smell persisting into Thursday.

A four-vehicle collision blocked Cherwell Drive for a while late on Tuesday afternoon. Six people were injured, none of them seriously.

Da Root in Windmill Road has changed its name to Osheey!!! (via @headingtonnews).

The Julia Durbin Day Nursery in Old Road, which offers childcare to staff at Oxford Brookes Campus and the Churchill Hospital, has been rated outstanding after an inspection in August just 10 months after an earlier audit stated it required improvement.

It was Risinghurst’s community fun day on Saturday.
