Headington Headlines #80

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 1 – 7 October —

There was a suspected arson attack early on Tuesday morning at Foresters Tower in Wood Farm. Two men were later arrested and have been released on bail.

Tuesday also saw low water pressure affecting the Quarry area yet again.

If you didn’t apply by Friday it’s now too late to enter for Step Dance School’s Headington Goes Strictly. Learn to dance in a day, show off your moves in the final competition on 17 November. Tickets available.

@nickyloymusic witnessed her neighbours thwarting a bike theft in Lime Walk. They accosted the would-be thief and called the police who marched the hapless youth off in handcuffs.

RH Transport, operators of the 700 hospital service, other routes and school buses, ceased operations without warning on Thursday. The County Council has arranged for new operators to run services from today (Monday).

Abacus College, currently based in George Street, has applied for change-of-use planning permission to allow them to move into the offices above Londis. There’s more information on the e-dem forum and you can see the planning application here.

David Cameron visited the JR Hospital on Saturday.

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 23 – 29 July —

From Italy to France: Café Corsica opened where Caffè Toscana used to be. @headingtonnews got the first picture.

There was a fire probably caused by an unattended candle in a house in Windmill Road on Monday. The family was evacuated and two people were taken to the JR as a precaution against smoke inhalation.

@TVP_OxNorthEast reported a spate of milk thefts in Marston & Northway.

When Holyoake Hall on the corner of London Road and Holyoake Street was built planning permission was supposed to include a restriction that the residents would not be allowed parking permits. It seems there was a cock-up and the provision was never included. So now they’re going to have permits after all. More on the e-dem forum.

Harcourt House in Marston Road has been bought from the City council by the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, aka the neighbours over the road. OCIS made an offer “too good for the Council to refuse” but has no immediate plans for the site.

The County Council is reported to be working on plans to upgrade and possibly widen the London Road between Headington shops and the Headington roundabout to incorporate a bus lane on each side along the whole stretch. The cost is unknown; timing may be 2014.

The Barton Neighbourhood Centre held a community fun day on Saturday to launch the Cleaner, Greener Barton initiative.

And continuing Saturday’s fun there was a free open-air screening of “Johnny English – Reborn” starring Queen’s College alumnus and Honorary Fellow Rowan Atkinson in Bury Kowle Park on Saturday night.

Headington Headlines #62

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 7 – 13 May —

The first mid-month Headington farmers’ market happened on Friday. It’s now on twice a month on the second and fourth Fridays, 8:00 to 13:30 on Kennett Road.

The County Council announced two new free bus services, H1 & H2.

The Council’s decision to hold the next NE Area Forum in the Town Hall instead of somewhere in the Headington area came in for criticism. Local LibDem councillor @DavidRundle said he wouldn’t attend the meeting but would instead spend the time on Ward business. The meeting is on Monday 21 May.

Cheney School parents voted against the school becoming an academy.

A prisoner out on day release and working in one of the charity shops is alleged to have assaulted another person working at the shop and then absconded. He’s now been caught.

Thames Valley Police @ThamesVP are appealing for information after a disturbance at a property in Headley Way on Monday 7 May.

Waitrose’s application for extended licensing hours was granted. They can now sell alcohol from 07:00 every day of the week even though they don’t open until 07:30 Monday to Saturday and 10:00 on Sundays.

The Planning Inspector for the Barton Area Action Plan hearing has been appointed. The hearing will be in the week beginning 16 July.

McDonalds run a charity – Ronald McDonald House – in the JR Children’s Hospital. It provides accommodation for parents whose children are in the hospital. Carl Room who runs several McD’s outlets around Oxford received an award (it doesn’t say who from) for his work for the charity.
