Headington Headlines #255

Your weekly round-up of local news for 22 – 28 February.

The first exhibition of the latest plans for Access to Headington was held on Saturday, and was well-attended. The plans have been modified since the initial proposals, but there are still bound to be some problems with the details. I will post more under the Access2H tab when I’ve got something ready.

The function room refurbishment @TheMasonsArmsHQ is complete.

Headington Quarry Nursery School is looking for a new Head Teacher to replace Lesley Carrington, who retires at the end of the academic year.

Oxford University’s Big Data Institute on the Old Road campus was topped out on Friday. It is Make Architects’ @MakeArchitects fifth building on the campus. Here is their description of the building.

Not strictly Headington, but if you saw the announcement a few days ago that Oxfordshire’s District Councils and MPs are backing the idea of abolishing the County Council and creating four Unitary Authorites you might like to know that there is now a websiite under the name Oxfordshire Vision and a twitter @oxonvision.

Lloyds Bank was the scene of an armed robbery on Saturday morning. Police say two masked men, one with a firearm, escaped in a white BMW. The same bank was robbed almost exactly three years ago (thanks to @HeadingtonNews for that link).

The Latimer Road student accommodation planning appplication goes to the City’s Planning Scrutiny Committee on Wednesday. It has been ‘called in’ after being rejected by the East Area Planning Committee, despite officers’ recommendation to accept. The papers for the Committee are here, with the details in the Agenda Reports Pack and a set of slides in the Presentation.

Still on planning, there’s an application (ref: 16/00082/FUL) to build three 5-bedroom houses on the site of the Quarry Gate pub.

A search of the Food Standard Agency’s “Scores on the Doors” food hygiene ratings for OX3 finds 204 rated premises. Of those, 10 are rated “2 – Improvement Necessary” or lower. The unhygienic wooden spoon goes to the Londis on Marston Road, rated “0 – Urgent Improvement Necessary” in March last year. Here are the 0 – 2 results with a map. Above a score of 2, the next is “3 – Generally Satisfactory”.

There has been a landslip from the old quarry wall in the back garden of a house in Coppock Close, thought to have been caused by the exceptionally wet weather recently. Fortunately no-one was hurt.

Charles Young, spokesperson for the Headington Car Club car-sharing scheme, presented a petition to Oxfordshire County Council before Christmas asking them to reconsider their refusal to allocate two on-street parking bays in Headington (see HH 240). Here he is in a video from @ThatsOxfordTV explaining how car-sharing works.

Also from @ThatsOxfordTV, here is Marston independent councillor Mick Haines, supported by Joanna Bartlett, urging support to stop the demolition of the Jack Russell pub to build housing.
