The Churchill Hospital is to be one of the new ‘one-stop shop’ centres for rapid cancer diagnosis.

There’s a planning application (ref. 18/00837/FUL) to build two new homes in the back garden of the house on the corner of Sandfield and Woodlands Roads. Access would be by a new entrance on Woodlands. Whether you think this would be a regrettable loss of green garden space or a welcome densification which will provide more much-needed housing is up to you. But I couldn’t help noticing the contrast between the idealised sylvan image in the architects’ computer-generated street elevation and the reality of Woodlands Road. Comments on the planning application close on 1 May.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information about a break-in at @TheAmpRevival in Risinghurst on Tuesday night when £1300 was stolen. Oxford Mail report here.

A Barton man has been given an eighteen month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to charges of sexual incitement. The man thought he was online with a 13-year old girl and was eventually confronted by ‘vigilantes’ outside his home.

The East Area Planning Committee gave Ruskin College planning permission for their student accommodation developments (see HH 337). They also gave permission for building four retirement homes on the playing field behind Bracegirdle Road (HH 358).

Posh Fish was named as one of the top 50 fish and chip shops in the country by Fry Magazine, and they should know. It was the only chippy in Oxfordshire included on the list.

The group Philosophy in Pubs which meets once a week in the city centre also meets once a month in The White Hart in Old Headington. They have a Headington facebook page with more information as well as their general Meetup page. Their March meeting is this Wednesday on the topic ‘Is the Self a Useful or Necessary Idea?’, and they stress that no previous knowledge or experience is required!

It looks like the Swan School, planned to be built on the site of the Harlow Centre in Marston, is going to be delayed. No planning application has yet been submitted, and when it is I suspect it’s unlikely to go smoothly. They are now talking of opening with temporary classrooms.

It seems the refurbishment of the Corner House pub has gone well. @ProperEllipsis gives the new décor five stars.

Oxford Brookes mounted a public exhibition of their latest plans to rebuild the Helena Kennedy building on their Headington Hill site, and to redevelop the residential Clive Booth Student Village. They have invited public comments, and there will be more opportunity once the formal planning applications go in. I’ve written a separate short article here.

There were three burglaries at London Road shops overnight last Tuesday/Wednesday. In all of them the doors at the back of the premises were broken open. Police are appealing for information

There’s a meeting this evening (Monday) in Old Marston where Christ Church College will face questions about their proposal to build 750 homes on land they own adjacent to Barton Park. The meeting is at 7pm in Mortimer Hall, Old Marston.

The latest proposal for Headington car park charges going to the Council’s Executive Board on 13 February is £2 for the first hour. It’s currently £1.70 for the first 2 hours.

The same car park has restricted parking this week – the Council is resurfacing it.

The frustrating on/off saga of Access to Headington work on Headley way continues. According to Ruth Wilkinson and the County itself, work at the entrance to the JR will be carried out starting this week at off-peak times. This despite the fact that funding for the scheme as a whole has not yet been sorted out. Work on The Slade has been going slowly because of the cold weather – it affects the curing of the surfaces (in oother words it doesn’t set properly).

A car allegedly driving the wrong way round Headington roundabout crashed with a lorry on Tuesday.

The White Hart in Old Headington has been chosen as CAMRA’s city pub of the year.

More yellow line parking restrictions are coming to parts of Barton and Roundway.

Nawabi Indian restaurant in Girdlestone Road overcame the setback of a 1-star hygiene rating last year by getting 5 stars in a recent re-assessment visit.

The Six Bells in Headington Quarry is closed; it may re-open in April.

Police are appealing for witnesses to a robbery in Blackburn Close (behind the Shell station) on Friday. A man was threatened and his van hijacked by two men in a black Corsa.
