Headington Headlines #336

Your weekly round-up of local news for 18 – 24 September.

Southern Health NHS Trust, who were heavily criticised over the death of Connor Sparrowhawk at Slade House in 2013, pleaded guilty to Health & Safety charges at Banbury magistrates’ court. Sentencing is due at Oxford Crown Court in October. The services and the building have since been transferred to Oxford Health NHS Trust who run the Warneford Hospital, among others.

In Osler Road on Monday a man was threatened by having a ‘sharp object’ pushed nto his back. The attacker demanded the man’s car keys and stole the victim’s Lexus. Police are apppealing for witnesses and information.

We are getting some new white paint on the roads in central Headington.

As rush-hour traffic problems in the city centre worsened with the Folly Bridge road works, @Stagecoach_Ox terminated all their inbound services at The Plain on Thursday evening and @OxfordBusCo suspended city centre services.

Headington Headlines #304

Your weekly round-up of local news for 6 – 12 February.

The @HeadingtonPlan has been through its final inspection and has been approved by the Headington Plan Forum. It’s now up to @OxfordCity to approve a referendum which if all goes well could be held in May at the same time as the County Council elections.

Three men were jailed for carrying out an armed robbery at Lloyd’s Bank in Headington in January last year.

The east Area Planning Committee approved @ScienceOxford‘s plans for the Stansfeld Field Centre site in Quarry.

The Oxford Mail carried a report about the City Council changing its mind over the demolition of a block of flats on Underhill Circus in Barton. The general regeneration programme there is still continuing.

We already knew that the City Council will take over a proportion of the new housing in @BartonPark_. It’s now reported that the City’s wholly-owned housing company which was set up last year will take over 95 units when they become available next year.

@BBCBentham on @BBCOxford radio did an item on Thursday about the suggestion that there should be a multi-storey car park at the JR. You can hear it on catch-up until 10 March. The first slot with Headington Cllr Altaf Khan starts at 39’10” and the second, with a multi-storey car park enthusiast from Birmingham (yes really), at 1h39’20”.

In other car park news, the patients’ car park at the Manor Surgery is open again at last. It looks well laid out with clear paved footways, disabled parking spaces and hopefully no more puddles!

Although Headington & Marston have a lively presence on the e-democracy forum some people have also subscribed to local messaging site Streetlife. This operation has been taken over by another, Nextdoor, which offers a similar platform for local discussion and exchange of information. Anyone thinking of signing up would do well to read the thread on the e-democracy forum, especially Stephanie Jenkins’ experience of being automatically designated “lead member”. And although it’s probably no worse than facebook, twitter or any other social media operation, you might like to read their privacy policy, especially as they require real names and actual street addresses.

There’s an online petition to save The Somerset pub on Marston Road, which closed in 2014. It was the last pub to survive in New Marston. The petition was started by Susannah Wilson and is supported by Councillor @joemcmanners. The Somerset is already listed as an Asset of Community Value, which gives locals first refusal if it is put up for sale provided they can raise the money

Headington Headlines #253

Your weekly round-up of local news for 8 – 14 February.

There’s a brief energy project round-up here. All my posts about the project are under the ‘Energy Project’ tab in the main menu, and there’s a page of links and contact details here.

Copse Lane, Marston will be closed east of Eden Drive from today (Monday) to Friday for construction of a pedestrian crossing.

Waitrose has submitted a planning application (ref: 15/03655/FUL) to put out tables & chairs on its Old High Street frontage.

A Barton man was sentenced to 6 years in jail for an assault with a bottle in March last year.

The group that runs the Tyndale School off Barracks Lane is interested in opening a new free primary school in Headington. I wrote a background piece about it.

@Oxonbike is going to add 16 electric bikes to its fleet this Spring. They say “Funding has been provided by the Dept of Transport and Oxford University to trial the interest and use of rental e-bikes within the scheme.” (And is ‘fleet’ the right term for a corporate set of bikes?)

Finders Keepers removed their advertising hoarding from the corner of Latimer Road after planning enforcement action.

A man from Headington was killed in an accident on the M40 near Banbury on the night of Sunday 7 February.

An enforcement notice has been served on the owner of 14 Sandfield Road requiring the fence to be lowered and the site cleared of excess materials.

Windmill Primary School @WindmillOxfordwas given an “outstanding” rating by Ofsted after an inspection last June.

A ‘small fire‘ at Oxford Brookes’ Abercrombie Building on Thursday evening became a ‘blaze‘ by the time the news reached @TheOxfordMail.

The two people arrested in connection with the Lloyd’s Bank robbery (see HH 250) appeared in Oxford Magistrates’ Court on Friday charged with robbery.

Also on Friday a person riding a bike was taken to hospital in a “serious but not life-threatening condition” after someone hit them with a car.
