Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 9 – 15 December.

The owner of the Fairview Inn in Glebelands is retiring after being given three weeks notice to quit following the sale of the pub to an unknown buyer. Although the current owners say the new owners will continue to run it as a pub the future is uncertain until the new owners reveal themselves. There was a farewell party in the pub on Thursday.

A new bench celebrating C S Lewis’ character Reepicheep from the Narnia stories has been installed in Bury Knowle Park.

LibDem Councillors @DavidRundle, @RuthWilk and @RosalindRogers wrote a letter published in the Oxford Mail asking the City Council to extend Christmas cheap parking to Headington car park to help local businesses.

A letter in the Oxford Mail from Councillor Mick Haines says that Tesco will start building on the site of the Friar pub in February.

Slade House, the care home and other services run by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, which closed to new admissions three weeks ago (see HH 139) is under investigation by health regulator Monitor.

The red phone box next to the Baptist Church in Old High Street is under threat of removal by BT. Locals led by Cllr @RuthWilk have mounted a last-minute attempt to save it. It’s the last surviving red phone box in Oxford outside the city centre. See these links for more on this story.

The Shark House in New High Street is back on the rental market again. For only £2300 pcm you can live under a landmark.

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 25 November – 1 December.

Brambles closed its doors for the last time. Well-wishers, souvenir hunters and opportunists were buying stock and fittings up to the last minute.

@Oxonbike going into liquidation means their twitter account is no more.

Talking of twitter accounts, I wrote a short article about some local schools’ failure at ‘doing twitter’.

Is this a new toilet facility or the latest incarnation of the Tardis behind @JacobsandField? No, they’re building an extension apparently.

A story surfaced about a suggestion that land next to C S Lewis’ house ‘Narnia’ in Kiln Lane, Risinghurst might be used to build sheltered housing. As far as I know there’s no planning application as yet, so nothing to comment on other than the story and the editorial comment in Thhe Oxford Times.

The @OxfordBusCo released pictures of its new and bigger coaches for the X90 London service. They say the livery is ‘dual-branded’ so they can use them on the airport services too. The larger coaches will initially be used to provide extra capacity at peak times starting in early December.

A firm of plumbers from Manchester was fined for fly-tipping in a field north of Barton off Bayswater Road.

A care home at Slade House on Horspath Driftway has been closed to new admissions by the Care Quality Commission, who found serious failings in the treatment of patients and the state of the facilities. Slade House is owned and run by Southern Health NHS Trust, who bought it from the Oxfordshire Learning Disability NHS Trust, also known as the Ridgeway Partnership, a year ago.

The new grit bin (originally reported here in October) has been installed on the corner of Ethelred Court and Dunstan Road. Headington Ward’s LibDem councillors and the Friends of Old Headington provided the funds.

Here is my weekly round-up of news for the week 4 – 10 July.

The Quality Care Commission issued a report heavily criticising standards in the Albany Nursing Home on the London Road. “The care provided fell far short of the essential standards of quality and safety people should be able to expect from a care home”, it says. The Albany Nursing Home is owned by Trinity Care (Crown) Limited, part of the troubled Southern Cross Healthcare Group. It is registered to care for 48 older people. [Latest] Southern Cross is closing all homes but says residents’ care will continue.

The County Council announced it has secured a grant of £5m for transport schemes. Around £3.5m of the grant will be put towards the following schemes:

  • Expanding Thornhill Park and Ride through the addition of 500 spaces
  • Creating a new outward-bound bus lane on London Road in Headington towards the ‘hamburger’ roundabout
  • Establishing two new low-carbon bus services connecting Thornhill Park and Ride with the John Radcliffe and other hospital sites, and the city centre.

Oxford Brookes University’s plans to put a maintenance unit on its £132m library and teaching building have got their neighbours annoyed again.

The first North-East Area Forum was on Tuesday. @RuthWilk and I both blogged about it. The Headington car park development dominated discussion, including in the e-dem forum.

A lorry and a Renault Clio collided on the London Road near the Green Road roundabout at about 07:15 on Monday.

The missing husky story made the Oxford Mail. The original twitter appeal was still being retweeted at the end of this week.

The Northway Estate reached its 50th anniversary.

The Mediterranean Fish Bar in Cherwell Drive, Marston, closed since a fire, re-opened.

An application to build flats in William Street, New Marston has been turned down because of concerns about overdevelopment, amenity space and access.
