Headington Headlines #167

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 9 – 15 June.

Thanks to the efforts of Highfield Residents Association and others, fine new planters have been installed at the junction of All Saints Road and Lime Walk.

Osler road is open again* after its resurfacing, and the new parking spaces have been marked out. It all seems to have gone very well apart from the odd minor glitch.
* I’m not sure if it’s officially open but cars are using it.

Harrison Ford made an unscheduled stop-over at the JR Hospital, not as a celebrity visit but because he broke his ankle on the set of the new Star Wars film.

Did you know there’s a Headington Hill in Queensland, Australia?

@CocoNoirOxford joined twitter recently.

Headington Headlines #166

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 2 – 8 June.

A cyclist was attacked in Barton Lane on Tuesday afternoon. A man knocked the cyclist off his bicycle and attacked him with a pair of scissors.

The three ladies of foodie blog @BittenOxford put @JacobsChopHouse to the test. Find out if it was a rare treat or if they gave it a roasting.

The Londis, run by @sundersandher, is being convertedinto a “One-Stop” shop. Sunder’s store in Leamington Spa became a One-Stop earlier this year and he has been enthusiastic about the change. One Stop is a franchise operation like Londis, and for those who get worked up about these things it is a subsidiary of Tesco, who are of course opening their own store on the other side of the road in July.

The Oxford Mail published an obituary of Marston parish councillor Roy Jones.

A U1 double-decker bus caught fire on the westbound A40 near Thornhill P&R on Friday afternoon. The A40 was closed for several hours and traffic was backed up to Junction 8 on the M40. None of the passengers was harmed. There’s no informtion yet on what caused the fire.

The opposite (eastbound) stretch of road was closed again on Sunday (yesterday) evening following a lorry collision and a diesel spillage.

Headington Headlines #165

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 26 May – 1 June.

It was Headington Festival @HeadingtonFest yesterday and Saturday. The weather was fine, the events were well-attended, and everyone had a good time!

Osler Road is closed from today (Monday 2 June) for 3 weeks (not 6 as the road closure signs say) for resurfacing. Buses will divert via Headley Way. Full information here on the LibDem Councillors’ website.

@NeilHoldstock announced on the e-democracy forum that he plans to open a small business centre in the shop on the London Road that used to be the Family Mediation Centre (near the Coventry Building Society). It’s an excellent idea, and I hope it succeeds.

The former Ormerod School on Waynflete Road, Barton is being converted into an academy school for 11 – 19 year-olds with autism and associated learning difficulties. The school will be run by MacIntyre Academies @meetmacintyre and is due to open for the Autumn term. They are currently advertising for Teaching Assistants. (I note the location is given as Headington, not Barton.)

Headington’s very own Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame gained her degree in English Literature from Brown University, an Ivy League university in Rhode Island. She spent the 2011-12 academic year studying at Worcester College here in Oxford as part of her course.
