Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 8 – 14 September.

Never mind Scotland, if you live in Quarry & Risinghurst don’t forget to vote in the City by-election on Thursday (18th). The five candidates are listed here.

If you normally catch the 8 or 9 bus in Castle Street you need to know that the stop has been temporarily moved to St Aldates, near Pembroke College. It’s to do with the closure of Queen Street for emergency sewer works.

Oxford City Council designated – i.e. approved – the Headington Neighbourhood Forum and in effect gave the go-ahead for them to draw up a Neighbourhood Plan. A consultation will start soon.

@OxfordBusCo is starting a new service, the City 600, on Monday 29 September. It will run from Peartree P&R via the Woodstock Road, Moreton Road, Banbury Road, Parks Road, South Parks Road, Longwall Street, The Plain, Headington Hill and Headley Way to the JR Hospital. It will run every half hour but only during the main part of the working day (roughly 9 – 5) on Mondays to Fridays.

In other bus news the BrookesBus U4 service starts today linking the JR and Blackbird Leys via Gipsy Lane and Hollow Way. But unless I’m reading the timetable wrong there are only two buses one way in the early morning and three back again in the evening.

@Headingtonnews reports that the ex-Londis is to become a Café Nero.

@OllieMars30 reported that the Little Waitrose at the Shell petrol station was closed by Trading Standards late on Saturday afternoon.

The lift giving disabled access to Headington Library was finally commissioned on Friday.

While the misery of flooding has been on everyone’s mind it’s been a quiet week up here on the hill in Headington. Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 3 – 9 February.

A woman suffered serious injuries at about 10.30 on Monday after falling from a third-floor window at Oxford Brookes University’s Clive Booth Hall (off John Garne Way, Marston).

As the bad weather continued, a fallen tree closed one lane of the A40 near Headington roundabout on Thursday evening.

@JacobsandField‘s new venture @JacobsChopHouse has applied for a licence to open 7 days a week from 08:00 to 22:00 (extended to 01:00 on New Year’s Eve/Day). They describe the operation, set in the old Café Noir premises, as “a restaurant with recorded music” and have applied for a licence to sell alcohol on the premises from 11:00 to 23:00 seven days a week.

After two years @LazygamerUK announced they are closing at the end of the month, but hope to be back in different premises before too long.

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 27 May – 2 June.

The Headington Festival @HeadingtonFest on Sunday was a great success, with sunshine and plenty of stalls and entertainments bringing out the crowds.

The elderly woman who was found dead in a house in The Link, Risinghurst last week died of natural causes. The man arrested on suspicion of murder has been released without charge.

There was a widely re-tweeted report about a woman in Muslim dress being spat at in Headington the week before last. I checked with the original poster @TellMamaUK and the source was a text message. They couldn’t give and I haven’t seen any further confirmation of the source or the story.

Fire and Rescure services were called to a chemical incident at Ivy Lane flats. A cleaner tried to unblock a sink with a chemical cleaner not knowing a resident had tried the same thing but with a different chemical the previous evening. The mixture gave off chlorine into the kitchen and the cleaner had to go to hospital. He was not seriously harmed.

A man was arrested after a teenage girl reported being raped in Headington on Tuesday evening the week before last (21 May). Police are appealing for witnesses or any other information.

@CafeNoirOxford‘s main course menu is now mainly pizza, although they still have a specials board.

@TheOxfordMail carried a nice memoir from the time Cotuit Hall was a children’s home.

Thornhill park-&-ride is getting a coffee stall in the waiting room.

Jack Straw’s Lane is fully open again after being re-surfaced as a cycle-friendly road. Despite the misleading – well, let’s be honest, wrong – headline in The Oxford Mail the road is still open to motor vehicles but the hope is that cars will drive more slowly and cyclists will feel safer.
