Headington Headlines #209

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 5 – 11 April.

The Londis store on the corner of the Marston Road and William Road was given a zero hygeine rating for, among other shortcomings, potentially selling poisonous potatoes.

The City Council invited applicants for the new housing in Lock’s Court (Bury Knowle Park) but made a mistake with the rents, getting muddled between ‘social’ and ‘affordable’ housing. @headingtonnews and @RuthWilk queried it and the Council has said they will notify applicants and start again. Here are the correct figures.

Headington Churches Together organised a hustings at the Baptist Church in Old High Street on Thursday evening. Over 120 people turned up but none of the three main party candidates was there. Click the image below for the Oxford Mail report of the evening.

@QuarryVelo cyclists paid homage to cycling’s Spring Classics by riding the remaining cobbled streets of Oxford in their Quarry – Roubaix ride on Sunday.

NINE candidates are standing for election in the Oxford East constituency:

Work has started clearing the way for the new access road to @BartonPark_. For an indication of how some local people are still upset about the road, see the thread on the e-democracy forum.

Headington Headlines #200

Another milestone reached – the 200th edition of Headington Headlines! There’s nothing particularly exciting to mark the occasion, but here anyway is my 200th weekly round-up of local news. It covers the week 2 – 8 February.

The persistent rumour that the Post Office might move into the Co-op was given some weight when local Councillor @RuthWilk confirmed that the Co-op “had expressed strong interest” in the idea.

As I reported in HH197, work on the Dora Carr Close development in Northway is starting. Architecture students at @Oxford_Brookes are designing and making a hoarding for the site “where people can share their view about the new development”. I think they mean ‘view’ as in ‘opinion’: it will be interesting to see how this plays out, and whether the local graffiti artists will allow others to join in. You can follow the students on twitter at @NewNorthway.

As mentioned last week, Johnsons Cleaners closed on Thursday. They have moved to Summertown.

Construction has started at the JR of a new ‘Welcome Centre’ which will include an M&S Simply Food shop and an M&S café. However, the site works mean that all the disabled parking spaces right next to the main hospital entrance have been lost. Although the disabled spaces in the nearby car park are rarely all taken, it does mean that disabled access will now be more difficult for some.

The Quarry Hollow street sign by the Chequers was hit by a car and broken on Saturday. Councillor @RosalindRogers is looking concerned and is on the case. She has the car’s registration, so if it was you I’d come clean now!

Headington Headlines #198

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 19 – 25 January.

Clerkenwell Properties Ltd, presumably the owners of Kennett House, the block of shops and offices including Iceland, have applied to the City Council to decide whether or not they need planning permission to convert the offices over the shops to 12 flats. See Planning Application reference 15/00189/B56.

Birmingham City Council has told @RosalindRogers that the woodland area of the Stansfeld Outdoor Centre will not be redeveloped.

@Oxford_Brookes announced that their new Vice-Chncellor is to be Professor Alistair Fitt. He is currently the university’s Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange.

Developers Frontier are mounting a new public exhibition of their proposals for the corner of Latimer Road. It’s on Tuesday 27 January from 4 – 8pm in the St Clement’s Family Centre in Cross Street. See their invitation for more details. No planning application has yet been submitted.

Marsh Lane, Marston was closed for a time on Saturday afternoon following a collision between a car and an ambulance. Three people suffered minor injuries.

Johnson Cleaners is closing on 5 February and moving to 61 Woodstock Road.
