The JR to Churchill heat transfer scheme

Remember the multi-coloured markings that appeared in and between Sandfield, Latimer and Stapleton Roads back in June (see HH220)? At the Headington Ward Focus meeting on Tuesday 27 October some information was given about the heat transfer scheme for which the markings were in preparation and which will supply the Churchill Hospital with surplus heat from the JR. People at the meeting were told there will be displays and information for residents soon.

Meanwhile, our Applied Thermodynamics Correspondent writes:-

The JR produces surplus heat which can be used by the Churchill, and has received a Government energy fund to lay this 1.5km pipe to transfer spare heat. The temperature drop in transit will be only 1 degree.

The pipe will start behind the women’s centre at the JR and pass along Sandfield Road. It will then cross the London Road. They can lay plates over the London Road to keep it open (one-third of the work is digging up, one-third laying the pipes, and one-third backfilling). It will then go down Latimer Road, cross All Saints Road, and then down Stapleton Road to the Churchill.

Work will start early in 2016, beginning at each end outside the two hospitals. It will take eighteen months in all.

The pipe will be laid in 300 metre sections. The coloured pavements earlier this year revealed that there is already so much pipework under the pavements that the transfer pipe will in places have to go down the middle of the road.

Headington Headlines #235

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 5 – 11 October.

@Oxford_Framing joined twitter.

@Oxford_Brookes‘ public art project “The Rain Pavilion” was finally on full view last weekend, just in time for the rain on Monnday.

Wood Farm Health Centre in Leiden Road reopened as Wood Farm Healthy Living Centre after a complete refurbishment, although the change of branding doesn’t seem to have reached its website yet.

The full planning application for student accommodation on the corner of Latimer Road is now on the City Council’s website (ref 15/00858/FUL).

Full marks to Leaders letting agency @LeadersOxford who took advantage of the total breakdown of civil society caused by bagmageddon by giving away reusable shopping bags carrying their logo.

The Diocese of Oxford wishes to recruit a Vicar for St. Mary’s in Barton. The church has entered into a partnership with St Aldate’s in the city centre which it is hoped will benefit both churches.

Headington Headlines #210

Here’s my weekly round-up of local news for 13 – 19 April.

Marston residents will be surveyed about the possible introduction of permit-only parking.

Cheney School Academy Trust has been recommended to run the new primary school that will be built in @BartonPark_. As well as the eponymous secondary school, Cheney also runs Bayards Hill Primary in Barton. A final decision will follow later, but with local support it’s fairly sure to happen.

The site of the old Friar pub on Marston Road has been put up for sale by Tesco after the company abandoned its plans to open a new store there.

An overflowing sewer in Barton caused raw sewage to flow down the street.

Headington Action @HeadingtonA have shared their reponse to Oxfordshire CC’s long-term transport strategy “Connecting Oxfordshire”, or LTP4, on the Oxford Futures website. (Oxford Futures is an initiative of Oxford Civic Society @oxcivicsoc.) Have any other Headington organisations or individuals responded? It would be interesting to see any more.

The planning application (Ref: 15/00858/FUL) to build student accommodation on the corner of Latimer Road is now on the City Council’s website.
